As part of the PowerPlayNYC Symposium, I lead a Networking For Success workshop for high school girls. It was tons of fun and I’m hoping to lead a similar workshop for fellow DinnerGrrls in the future.
You can see the entire album from that day by clicking here.
Here are a couple grown-up versions of pointers that I shared during the workshop:
- What does success in networking mean to you? If you haven’t given a smidgen of thought about your networking goals, you probably won’t get much out of a networking event. If you can’t finish the sentence “I am networking in order to yaddi yadda“, then take a moment to consider this! (And yes, it can be as vague as “… figure out what I should do with my life.”)
- Be sure to place your nametag on the right side of your chest at your next networking event. This way, when you extend your right hand for the handshake, it’s easy for the other person to read your name. (If you shake with your left, you should definitely break the letter of this law.)
- Google yourself, and make sure your Facebook profile is appropriately private. If you’re attending a networking event with a pre-published guest list, other people are probably going to be Googling you. What will they find? The same goes for your Facebook profile; if you’ve allowed everyone in your geographic network to see your entire profile — even if they’ve never met you — you may end up fielding some uncomfortable questions.
In my real life, I am a marketing nerd that over-thinks topics such as one’s personal brand and Facebook privacy settings, so if you’re interested here’s more resources:
