From Lizzie Widdicombe’s “That’s Italian” in the November 2, 2009 issue of The New Yorker:

A young filmmaker named Ricardo Costa said that the Italian life style is “about finding the right reasons to live your life.”  He added that he had recently completed a short film on this subject: in it, he stands near the Astor Place subway stop with a camera and polls passersby about their careers. “I asked, ‘What are you doing? Are you happy to be doing that?’ Some people said, ‘I think so,’ but they were not sure. Some people said that they didn’t ask themselves the question, because they were afraid of the answer.” The majority of New Yorkers told him, “Happiness doesn’t exist.”

What say you?

  • Do you agree with the “majority of New Yorkers” who allegedly claim “Happiness doesn’t exist.” ?
  • What are you doing?
  • Are you happy to be doing that?
