When the historic 109th Congress convened, the number of women in the Senate increased to an unprecedented 14. Now, their struggle to balance family and politics is chronicled in this heartwarming look at the most powerful women in America. A story of perseverance and poise, 14 Women will inspire and uplift audiences of all ages.

ABOUT THE ROOSEVELT HOUSE PUBLIC POLICY INSTITUTE AT HUNTER COLLEGE
Roosevelt House, an integral part of Hunter College since 1943, reopens this year as a public policy institute, honoring the distinguished legacy of Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt. Its mission is three-fold: to educate students in public policy, to support applied policy research, and to foster creative dialogue. The new institute will provide opportunities for students to analyze public policy and experience meaningful civic engagement; for faculty to research, teach, and write constructively about important issues of the day; and for scholarly and public audiences to participate in high-profile lectures, seminars, and conferences.

anittah on "Ideas- Recycled or Stolen?"

This is a great question and this has happened to me before. My reaction:

1. Crestfallen. "I thought I was special and original!"
2. Jealousy. "I hope they don't run with this idea before I can."
3. Frustration. "Everyone's always stealing my toys!"

Now that I have grown up (a little bit), I've noticed that when this situation has occurred my reactions are now closer to:

1. Excitement. "Oh cool; if someone else has this idea then I must be on to something!"
2. Excitement 2. "I've gotta do coffee with this person and see if we can join forces."

Depending on how the "can we collabo?" discussion goes, I'm either:

- Glad to let them run with it as they're better suited for it, have thought more deeply about it, or something along those lines
- Confident that even if we both run with it, my execution is going to be more effective as I'm better suited for it, have thought more deeply about it, or something along those lines.

As I've grown up, I've learned to abandon (to steal a phrase from Newark mayor Cory Booker) "the tyranny of the or" and instead celebrate the beauty of the _and_. It is not a zero sum game and there is room in this universe for healthy co-opetition.

So even if someone else in your company has the same idea or concept as you, doesn't mean you can't

- join forces
- both pursue it

The former may give birth to a fabulous synthesis; the latter may deeply illustrate just how unique your individual fingerprint on the world is. Ultimately how you shape and give rise to the embryonic concept is going to be markedly different from anyone else's, right?

Good luck!

What would you do if you discovered someone else with the same company idea or concept as you? Would you feel like the originality of your idea has been someone compromised? Or would you just go along with the belief that ideas are recycled throughout the universe constantly?
